The Story

In this hand colored print, we see two fish with the labels "Perca &c" and "Perca canda nigra" for the the Black-Tail and Negro-Fish. One of many animals illustrated for "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" series cataloging native species and their environments. Collector's Notes:

Mark Catesby, English (1679-1749)

This etching and engraving is hand-colored on laid paper and depicts two fish with labels "Perca &c" and "Perca canda nigra" denote the two tail fish species, the Black-Tail and Negro-Fish.

Catesby's work is distinctive for its combined portrayal of plant and animal life on the same page, a style that was both practical and innovative for its time.

Mark Catesby was an English naturalist, painter, and etcher, best known for his pioneering work, "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands." He spent significant time in the American colonies, particularly the southeastern region, studying and documenting its flora and fauna. His work is notable for its detailed illustrations, often combining plants and animals on the same page, and for being the first color plate book on American birds.

Condition: Very Good
